MINI SERIES PT3: THE TONGUE

Known majorly for its sense of taste (thanks to the taste buds) and role in the digestion process, the tongue is also very instrumental when it comes to speech –I can’t imagine how words would be voiced without the tongue though it’s not the only part involved as far as speech is concerned.

Growing up, it was often mentioned that our words were seeds, that one should be careful what one wished or said. Over time, it has been discovered and proven that indeed the tongue is powerful, having the capacity to build or destroy, heal or hurt—little wonder it’s the largest muscle in the human body.
With all the history above in view, it still shocks me when people make use of their tongues “anyhow”. By anyhow, I mean not speaking words that would yield good fruits or words of edification. Or speaking words that one would regret sometime in the future. For me, I feel our words are meant to build up, instill hope and quicken the faith of those listening. I feel our words ought to bless not curse, heal not wound, be soothing not bruising. We should weigh our thoughts well before they are transformed to words. Our words ought to be truthful and honest.
Of a truth, we need to bridle our tongues, be cautious of whatever we say. At times, thoughts sound okay to us but when turned into words may not turnout as we thought. Be careful with your words cos the person being referred to may see it in the wrong light and hold on to it forever. I find it so wrong when parents place curses on their children all in the name of being angered. Then, when the curses begin to play out, they’d go to heights and depths in a bid to find solutions. Same as a person—unconsciously or otherwise—professing negative words over his or her life.
You might ask; “how do I weigh my words”? Well, one way I believe you can is to turn the tables around. Put yourself at the receiving end and imagine how you’d feel if the words you are about to speak were spoken to you in such situation.  If you feel okay then spill it otherwise don’t. One exception though is if what you have in mind the plain truth, then go ahead because correction and truth is far better than flattery.
On a conclusive note, I charge you to speak words that ooze blessings, wisdom, love and all the good things that be. Let the words that roll off your tongue build up, change people for the better, heal and solve problems. I challenge you to speak wise words, words that you won’t live to regret and words that would positively impact those around you. All in all, bridle your tongue because what you confess is what you possess.

Truly Mina.
