ON JOURNALING: BENEFITS

I feel like I say this almost every time I come on here, but Oh well!, I loovvee writing. I actually don’t think I could get tired of it except when I'm—unfortunately—stuck in a writer’s block. I started “writing” a year or so into secondary school and though there have been highs and lows, it’s been love a major part of the way all the way. I would be writing about journaling today, sure the post title has given that away already.
I remember my Sis having a diary at some point and I observed that she updated it regularly. I on the other hand used to suck at keeping a diary—I still suck a bit—
basically because I don’t like people stumbling upon my stuff forget I have a journal at times.Lol. Years passed, stuff happened along the way and I felt the need to write my random thoughts and life happenings just for records sakes. I then begun keeping journals—“journals” because I write random things in various books and I must confess it can be hard finding snippets at times. I’m looking at getting a physical journal soon—my device is my softcopy journal—and would definitely personalize it with some *creative magic*. The personal effects aside, let’s get down to the main thing; WHY SHOULD I KEEP A JOURNAL??
From my POV, a journal doesn’t necessarily have to contain strictly personal/life details, it can also have things that you’ve found inspiring or just random thoughts and feelings.

For me, journaling helps to get a clearer view of things at times. You know those moments when things are blurry and confusing or you just can’t sift through your thoughts? Try journaling for a clearer perspective, write it all out, as plain as it is in your head and read through. It would likely make more sense then.

It serves as a record and reference point : I remember one time, I was working on this little project—that I sadly later abandoned  cos it just wasn’t coming together—and the start was a note from a journal saying it (the journal)  was to help record things that the writer would likely forget someday. Just like Ed Sheeran said in Photograph and I paraphrase, a journal freezes time and lets events reel before your eyes in some future time.

It improves writing skills: Blogger, poet, storyteller, Joe Bloggs; whichever you may be, journaling helps better writing skills. I often look at past journals and can’t help but notice that my narrative skills have improved. Journaling makes a better writer of one.

It helps to reflect on growth/advancement: I reckon it’s almost impossible to journal without any attachment (that is, adding a couple of life details). What you “journaled” yesterday when read tomorrow would most definitely tell on how much you’ve changed or grown—it’s that easy.
Eureka moments: This is one major reason I keep journals. Those moments when great and novel ideas cross your mind or flash before your eyes, a journal is useful to put those ideas and notions down before they slip away or lose their relevance. Just let your stream of thoughts flow by journaling, no inhibitions.

Summarily, journaling is a good thing to make a habit of. Get a journal that suits you—soft or hard copy—and get journaling already. It may not feel natural at first but with time it would.
Afterthought: Journaling is in no way restricted to a certain gender, anybody can—probably everybody should—own a journal. I forgot to say as well that journaling is therapeutic.

What do you think about journaling? Do you keep a journal? What effects has journaling had on you? Do tell me in the comments section,I'd love to hear your thoughts?
Till next time. Truly Mina
