Musing: Social media, closer but distant.

Hey guys!! It has been a while I posted any of my musings. I'm here with one today.

It's no news that we are in the computer age and the internet and social media are slowly but steadily becoming a part of our lives. From top social media sites and apps, forums to blogs, social media is fast becoming something that every internet user has a hand in. Social media connects people far and wide, it links one up with new people. It could also bring about communication with long-lost friends. It seems social media has bridged a gap in communication, right? But my question is, has it really?

Yes, the social media platforms seem to have definitely brought us closer, just type some words, tap a button and presto! You’ve gotten through to that certain person. I could not agree more that it makes it easier to reach people, no need scaling 7 mountains just to say hello. You could just say hello from the other side. Sadly, I feel despite people being closer, there’s still this distance. You may be able to “monitor” your friend thanks to the ease of using social media but it doesn’t necessarily make you less distant. People portray what they desire via social media.

You might wonder what I’m trying to get at, lemme break it down. It’s very easy to avoid telling the truth and pretend on social media platforms. It’s very easy to say or type; “I’m fine” when truly things are not going well. It’s very easy for the receiving party to not bother trying to dig any further. Yes, social media has connected us and at such we feel we know how certain people fare just by the words they type. Sometimes, you need to step away from those platforms, put a call through (inferences can be made from the tone of one’s voice). Or pay a visit to connect real time, to relate genuinely with people and the fixes or whatnot they may or may not be in. I’m not saying to disregard social media, by all means don’t but at times more effort is needed to really connect and reach that person. Social media has brought us closer but hasn’t fixed the distance to the fullest. Communication ought to be effective for best results, not just done on the surface.

Just my thoughts,
'Mina.
